Why Are We So Stressed?
We are entering the time of year when most of our stress levels rise with the busyness of holidays, potential financial concerns, and worries about navigating difficult family relationships and dynamics. Add to that the mounting concern we are all facing of rising prices for basic necessities and global events, it is no wonder that the upright are more uptight than ever before.
How Do You Remain Thankful in Difficult Times?
God’s word does provide us with a strategy for surviving seasons of stress. Let’s start with Philippians 4:4-8 which says, “Always be full of joy in the Lord; I say it again, rejoice.” Paul goes on to say “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything; tell God your needs, and don’t forget to thank him for his answers. … Fix your thoughts on what is good and true and right. Think about things that are pure and lovely, and dwell on the fine, good things in others. Think about all you can praise God for and be glad about.”
Putting Strategy Into Practice
• Worry about nothing
One way to reign in your worrying is to set specific boundaries. Make a list of your concerns and set aside a specific time of day to “worry” about them. If you want to get a handle on your stress, focus on living one day at a time.
• Pray
God cares about your details; the big and the small. If it is worth worrying about, it is worth praying about.
• Thank God
The Bible tells us to be thankful “in” all circumstances not “for” all circumstances. Being thankful “in” all circumstances means realizing that God has the power to bring good out of bad, that he will give us the power to overcome the problem, and that we can mature out of the situation. Focus on what you have left rather than what you have lost.
• Think About the Right Things
You have to make a conscious decision about what you feed your mind. Focus on the positive and God’s word. The more time you spend in God’s word, the more you will change the way you think, feel, and act.
