The creative team skillfully addresses a subject that resonates profoundly with Christians: the conflict of staying sensitive to those out of religion. The Chosen presents biblical stories simply yet deeply touchingly. The first episode of season four dramatically presents people's reflections on how to live a faith-filled life in a complex and sometimes cruel world.
One of the most significant points of this episode is the prediction of Christ and the death of John the Baptist. Through flawless manipulation, Herodias compels her daughter to dance for King Herod, who promises to grant anything, even half of his kingdom. Since the king cannot rescind his word, he orders the beheading of John upon Herodias' daughter's request. The writers do an excellent job of setting up the two types of prophecy: Jesus as the lamb who dies for our sins, and then there is the one where He is a king of the world.
Staying Responsive
The episode tactfully reminds us of what it means to remain steadfast in faith even when the circumstances are difficult. The disciples of Jesus demonstrate how people should interact in steadfast faith in the face of adversity. John the Baptist's commission is complete. The prophets prophesied that he would be born to prepare the way for the Messiah. He teaches according to the law of Moses, preaching, baptizing, and preparing the people before Jesus' mission begins.
Prophecies about Christ
Of particular interest is how the show treats prophecy in this episode. It focuses on the two-fold aspect of the concept of the Savior in salvation history. In one prophecy, Jesus is of love and a hero due to the act of dying for the sins of humans. He is in anguish and shares in sorrow with the disciples upon learning of the death of John. It shows his humanity and empathy for the injustices that occur in the daily lives of Christians. Conversely, it portrays him as the world's supreme leader. These aspects contribute towards building the knowledge of the call of Christ and his Person.
